“It seems to me that at the moment there is a competition between referees and variologists.” This is Gasperini’s analysis after his Atalanta’s victory at San Siro against Milan in the quarter-finals of the Italian Cup. Match from which the Bergamo coach was sent off for having claimed a VAR check that was not granted. “It’s not clear who referees”, continues Gasperini. “And this damages everyone. VAR was created to reduce serious errors by referees, then it took over. Now it is no longer clear when it is a penalty: there are episodes in which everyone shouts, everyone interprets. There is confusion and when people no longer have certainties. Instead of helping the referee in solving major problems, the VAR searches for and searches for a normal action in which no one in normal conditions saw anything.”
