By signing for Chelsea from Levante for a fee of up to 500,000 euros, Colombian striker Mayra Ramirez has become the most expensive footballer in history. The previous record was held by Keira Walsh, whose transfer from Manchester City to Barcelona was worth 460,000 euros.
Concerning Ramirez, “the operation amounts to 450,000 euros, plus 50,000 euros in bonuses,” said the Spanish club in a press release. These will be unlocked if the Colombian plays “at least 30% of matches”. These figures remain far from the record for men’s football, still held by Neymar (from Barça to PSG for 222 million euros in 2017).
Mayra Ramirez, who arrived in the summer of 2022 at Levante, has scored 19 goals in 40 games. The Colombian international (23 caps, 3 goals) leaves second in the Spanish championship, nine points behind leader Barcelona, to join Chelsea, leader of the English Super League with three points ahead of Manchester City. “Being part of such an important club is a dream come true, a dream that I have had since I was little,” she said.
The Blues are also already qualified for the quarter-finals of the Champions League, but according to UEFA regulations, Ramirez will not be able to take part in the rest of Chelsea’s European campaign.
