Alex Kroes faces a tough task at Ajax next summer, as the new technical director of the Amsterdam record champion acknowledges in conversation with De Telegraaf. The fifty-year-old from Utrecht tells the morning newspaper more about his daily work at Sports Complex De Toekomst and says he works seventeen-hour days. An exciting summer awaits Ajax.

Kroes steps in as technical director at a crucial time. “Key positions have been unmanned or not properly staffed for too long. And if, like now, you don’t play the Champions League for two years in a row, but you do have a Champions League budget, then that will of course have a financial impact.”

The technical director would prefer to compete for prizes again in the coming season. “Because I am a very impatient man. But is it realistic? We are doing our utmost to create the conditions, but I cannot say anything sensible about it yet. On September 1, after the transfer market has closed, I will have a reasonable picture. But everything really needs to be done,” says Kroes.

Ajax will first sell next summer and then enter the transfer market to bring in reinforcements. Kroes tells this about the strategy. “We have jointly taken a position on this as a management. We know the financial situation and have made the forecast. I cannot say anything about that because of the stock exchange listing. But it is not wise to bring in all kinds of players now, while no one is there yet. sold.”

Kroes does not want to say anything about his predecessor Sven Mislintat, but does say that the German has left a considerable challenge at Ajax. The people of Amsterdam are facing a major clean-up. “I just have to get rid of players. If no one wants to leave, the new coach will have to make do with this number. Fortunately, we still have some time. In an ideal world we have a selection of 24 men, which is well balanced and a large part of which was trained by Ajax.”

Kroes has an ideal image of how he wants to see Ajax’s selection. “The selection then consists of six or seven young talents from our own youth, a group that is always a basic player, a few boys who can play in multiple positions and three or four players who make the difference to become champions.”

The manager names three players he would prefer to see stay at Ajax. “I definitely don’t want to lose Jorrel Hato, for example. We only want to sell him if he does extremely well at European and national level in a winning Ajax, because then his price will be even higher. He now has the highest book value profit potential, but is not allowed to leave Just like Brian Brobbey, Kenneth Taylor and our other own guys.”
