If Vitesse manages to track down those who entered the field in Sunday’s match against Feyenoord, they could receive a national stadium ban for five years. There is also a fine of 450 euros for people aged 18 and over.

The Premier League match in Arnhem was temporarily stopped in the 87th minute after people came from the stands towards the field. Things went wild when Feyenoord had taken the lead (2-1) in the Gelredome moments earlier. Vitesse supporters ran along the field to the main stand.

After an interruption of about twenty minutes, the match was resumed. The score did not change in the remaining minutes.

Detecting field entrants

Vitesse will try to identify the fans who entered the field with the help of the police. The club can then decide to pass on the names to the KNVB. In that case, they could receive a national stadium ban of sixty months plus an age-related fine.

In the most extreme case, a lifelong stadium ban will follow, according to a spokesperson for the football association. “It is clear that what happened in Arnhem is unacceptable.”

“It’s very bad that this happened,” said a Vitesse spokesperson. “Players and staff: everyone here is disappointed. Just like many supporters, they whistled at the misbehaving fans from the stands.”

Arnhem mayor Ahmed Marcouch, who was in the stadium, also had nothing good to say about the misconduct to De Gelderlander. “Sad that this group of troublemakers ruins it for the rest. I saw fathers who had to comfort their anxious children and shocked people in wheelchairs who were taken to safety. Those rioters have no idea what they are doing,” Marcouch said in the newspaper.

ANPVitsse players after the match

There are several stories going around about the circumstances of the stampede, the regional newspaper reports. There would have been fans of foreign clubs among the Arnhem supporters in the South Stand, who wanted to attack Feyenoord supporters. According to stories among the Vitesse supporters, it would be the hard cores of the Belgian RFC Liège, FC Midtjylland and the Romanian club Petrolul, several sources told De Gelderlander.

Vitesse is aware of the rumors, but says it cannot confirm the stories.
