Euroleague Women’s Asvel and Villeneuve-D’Ascq: a Recap of Recent Matches

The last hopes of women’s Asvel in the Euroleague undoubtedly vanished on Wednesday evening in Zaragoza (60-63). Alexia Chery then Gabby Williams each had the three-point shot to equalize in the final seconds but the two Rhone attempts fled the circle. With an eighth defeat in eleven matches, the Lionesses will be officially eliminated on Thursday in the event of Schio’s victory against Fenerbahçe, leader of Group A.

Largely leading at the break, David Gautier’s players, informed last week of his non-extension, revolted in the third quarter, in the wake of Williams (12 points). Lacking skill, Johannes brought his team back a little more on a lay-up plus the foul (55-51, 33rd). But Leonie Fiebich (12 points, 12 rebounds) punctuated her good copy for Zaragoza with two free throws then a basket against Sandrine Gruda under the circle (61-58, 39th).

2/20

The starving success of Asvel with three points in Zaragoza. Johannes scored the two winning baskets for the Rhodaniennes (2 out of 9 in the exercise).

Missed opportunity for Villeneuve-d’Ascq

Villeneuve-d’Ascq remains in the race for the quarter-finals, but the ESBVA missed a great opportunity to pull away from its direct competitors, Wednesday evening in Bologna (62-65). In the lead at the start of the “money-time” after an inside basket from Kariata Diaby (62-61, 38th), the team led by Rachid Meziane let the victory slip away. Francesca Pasa (24 points) first scored two free throws to put Iliana Rupert’s Virtus (4 points, 2 rebounds) back in control.

Then, while the Guerrières were only trailing by one point, Zellous (12 points) attempted a difficult, missed shot before committing an offensive foul six seconds from the buzzer coming out of the timeout. The Northerners remain level with third place.

The last French club to enter, Basket Landes defeated Györ at the start of the evening (83-75) with 15 points from Alexis Peterson and a complete game from Angela Salvadores (14 points, 8 rebounds, 7 assists). But Julie Barennes’ players (3 wins, 8 losses) remain far from the top 4 qualifiers, in the Villeneuve-d’Ascq group.
