Euroleague Transfers: Players React With Suspicion

During the last week, the possibility of implementing a system similar to NBA transfers has arisen in the Euroleague following the statements of the executive director of the EHCB (Coaches Association), Goran Sasic. However, the idea has not been well received by players, as most of them have reacted with suspicion.

Although there is a willingness to listen to proposals and Sasic was really optimistic, ELPA (Players’ Association) and the Euroleague management must reach an agreement before taking the proposal to the clubs that own the competition.

«First of all, We will work with Euroleague and ELPA to find a mechanism«Sasic explained to Eurohoops. «This does not mean that it has been found. It also doesn’t mean that we have a mechanism that we are thinking about. I’m a big believer in brainstorming. This means that I think the ELPA, the EHCB and the EuroLeague senior management should talk about it. The ELPA, the EHCB and the Euroleague management discuss things, make different simulations and proposals. It is taken to the Euroleague council, that is, where the clubs are, the owners. Then the decision is made, of course, by the Euroleague clubs«.

One of the aspects that generated the greatest suspicion among the players was the possibility of being transferred to another place in Europe without having decision-making power, since at least in the NBA the exchanges are carried out within the same country. However, that would not happen with transfers in the Euroleague:

«It must be a complete consent between club A, club B and the player. We respect our players. Our coaches, whenever they think about the application of a rule, think first about how it affects their players. So the mentality here is that all the things that coaches try to do should be for the benefit of the players. I think that’s the essence. So in that case, from our perspective, I can safely say that it should be a three-way consent. The players should accept any type of change that is made in the club. Nobody is going to impose anything on them«.

The ELPA sees it as difficult for there to be transfers in the Euroleague

The general director of the Euroleague Players Association, Bostjan Neighboranalyzed the (im)possibility of making transfers through the Euroleague in the red social X.

«The idea of a ‘transfer mechanism’ in the Euroleague has attracted attention lately. Although there is no significant advantage for the ELPA to reach a ‘transfer’ agreement in the EuroLeague, it must be added that in order to create (in theory) such a mechanism, this raises some inevitable legal questions.

The near impossibility of “transferring” player contracts across borders and national leagues precludes the option of having this system in the first place.. Most likely, the contract will have to be terminated first and then re-signed with a new team, under the same conditions.

This basically eliminates the option for the team change to be a “transfer”, like the one we know in the NBA. But if we talk about terminating a player’s contract and signing for the new team, we already see that now, during the Euroleague transfer period.«.

Possibly, it would be necessary to add to these issues the different tax rates in each country and other legal obstacles. Having all these factors in hand, it seems very difficult for us to see its implementation in the short term.
