DFB Cup: Kaiserslautern is in the semi-finals after beating Hertha in Berlin

Hertha BSC – 1. FC Kaiserslautern 1:3 (0:2)

In the second quarter-final, in which two second division teams faced each other in the DFB Cup, 1. FC Kaiserslautern won against Hertha BSC and is now in the semi-finals. On Tuesday, Fortuna Düsseldorf won against St. Pauli in Hamburg after extra time and a penalty shootout.

Coach Dimitrios Grammozis’ team traveled to Berlin with an unchanged starting lineup compared to their last successful league game (4-1 win against Schalke). At Hertha, coach Pál Dárdai initially left the match winner from the round of 16 against the Hamburg sports club (5:3 nE), Fabian Reese, on the substitutes’ bench.

Kaiserslautern took the lead in the 5th minute through Jan Elvedi, who quickly took a rebounding long-range shot and shot straight away. There were hardly any scoring opportunities in the early stages. Kaiserslautern was stable at the back and the Berliners also allowed almost no offensive action apart from the early goal. Until after a tee shot from Berlin goalkeeper Marius Gersbeck, the ball was lost right on the halfway line and Marlon Ritter passed it into the path of Richmond Tachie, who placed the ball in the far corner in a technically impressive manner.

In the second half, coach Dárdai made a change, took defender Márton Dárdai off the pitch and put Fabian Reese on the offensive. Deyovaisio Zeefuik also remained on the bench for Andreas Bouchalakis. Hertha thus broke up the three-man chain – Kaiserslautern initially stayed with the three-man chain. Slowly a fast game developed in which the ball occasionally moved from sixteen to sixteen. Hertha in particular tried to increase the pressure on Kaiserslautern, often from the left side and through Fabian Reese, and had many chances to score, often from the second row.

In the 69th minute, Kaiserslautern increased their lead to 3-0. After a bad pass from Bouchalakis, Filip Kaloč ran towards goal and then shot from 20 meters. Hertha tried more and more desperately to create compelling scoring opportunities, but rarely had any promising opportunities. In the first minute of stoppage time, Fabian Reese scored a remarkable volley after a Kaiserslautern header. But after that it was over.
