Derby Drama: STVV vs Racing Genk Ends in Spectacular Sporting Battle

Another derby with a dark edge. STVV – Racing Genk turned out to be a spectacular sporting battle, in which the visitors saw a quick lead erased by a surprising equalizer at the end. After 2 red cards for Genk, some visiting fans stirred by throwing flares onto the field. After a cooling-off period, the match ended 1-1.

Farmers’ protest in Sint-Truiden and Stayen that was sold out for the first time since 2015. That combination caused the match to start with a half-hour delay.

Enough time wasted, they thought at KRC Genk, barely a minute after kick-off, the visitors already scored. Fadera took off at speed and on his cue Sor was able to open the score very early.

It almost became 0-2 immediately afterwards, but Sor’s second goal was rightly disallowed for offside. A promising start to the Limburg derby, but the Genk blitz start was not followed up and there was also no strong response from STVV.

At Genk, goal scorer Sor dropped out, one of the many moments when the match was interrupted. In this way the derby did not gain any momentum. Shortly before half-time, Racing Genk escaped a penalty when Fadera crashed Yamato in the box. Neither ref D’Hondt nor the VAR saw any problem in it.

Just after half-time, Genk was shocked again when Vandevoordt simply handed the ball to Yamamoto, but the goalkeeper corrected his mistake with a great save on a shot by Steuckers. Immediately afterwards, Paintsil and Fadera, both just back from the African Cup of Nations, put together a clever counter. Fadera had a huge chance to make it 0-2, but missed it.

A few minutes later, Genk came close to scoring a second goal on a corner kick. Van Helden was able to turn Heynen’s header in front of the goal line and Coppens made an excellent save on a swipe by Tolu. On the hour mark, Heynen took his chance again with a nice move, this time the crossbar kept Genk from the redeeming 0-2.

STVV was powerless at the front, but Genk still almost got the better of it. Fadera pushed Ananou down in the box and now the ball hit the spot. Steuckers had the 1-1 at his feet, but Vandevoordt chose the right angle and Ito could not score in the restart.

With an impressive rush through the center, Paintsil was the next to score the 0-2, but again Coppens kept STVV in the match. Shortly afterwards the puppets started dancing when the same Paintsil dropped into the box. Arteaga grabbed Zahiroleslam by the throat and was sent off for it, a heavy verdict in his farewell match at Genk.

At the start of more than 10 minutes of extra time, STVV came alongside with a surprising free kick from Ito. Shortly afterwards, Heynen received his second yellow card and Genk was suddenly down to nine. Some Genk hotheads behind Coppens’ goal then decided to throw flares on the field and referee D’Hondt had no choice but to send the players inside.

After a short cooling-off period, the match could be resumed, but the score did not change. A derby that should have started at 1:30 PM was blown off at 4:19 PM with a 1-1 final score.
