Cuban Judo Sets Sights on Paris Olympic Games

Havana, January 1.- Cuban judo closed a good year in 2023 and will begin 2024 with its sights on the Paris Olympic Games, a multi-sport event for which it has three men and one woman in the qualification zone, with Andy Granda standing out , in more than 100 kilograms (kg).

According to the latest update of the Olympic ranking (RO), by the world list (RM), Granda appears in fifth place, followed by Iván Silva (90 kg-twentieth) and Idalis Ortiz (+78-twenty-fifth), while Magdiel Estrada (73 kg) is located in 21st place, but due to the quota of the Pan American Confederation (CP).

It should be noted that the place for the CP is only one per country, and if Estrada improves his position in the RM, then he could be replaced by Maylín del Toro (63 kg-66), to which is added that in the RO relationship only This can be one per nation.

To those quotas must be added the achievement of the Cuban parajudocas, in the J1 and J2 categories, with Sheyla Hernández (J2/+70 kg/third), Yordan Fernández (J2/+90 kg/fifth), Yonaldi González (J1/2). 60 kg/ninth), Jose Romero (J1/73 kg/fifteenth) and Ariagna Hechevarria (J1/70 kg/fifteenth).

Further away are, although they can improve, Jennys Garcia (J1/73 kg/twenty-second) and Reinaldo Zamora (J1/90 kg/twenty-ninth).

Among the results of 2023, it is worth highlighting the performances in multidisciplinary events, especially the Central American and Caribbean Games in San Salvador (JCC), the Pan American and Parapan American Games (JP/JPARAPAN) in Santiago de Chile, and those of ALBA, in which Cuba attended with young figures.

In the JCC the medal count was nine gold, including the mixed team, three silver and two bronze, the same as in the JP (6-0-1), while in the ALBA it was 11- 3-1.

There are several outstanding individual results, but it is worth remembering the performance of Granda, who won the individual title and the mixed team title in the JP, in the latter with two victories, since in the draw for the tiebreaker with Brazil for the crown , the man from Matanzas repeated the success that guaranteed Cuba to climb to the top of the podium.

Now judo focuses on the qualifying events that will define the places for Paris, hence they are waiting for the approval of the critical route, Andrés Taño, secretary and national methodologist of the Cuban Federation, informed ACN.

Taño added that they plan to complete training bases in Hungary and France for the men’s and women’s teams, in that order, which will facilitate, as in 2023, participation from those countries in various tournaments, with emphasis on the fact that they distribute points – the last on June 23 – for the RM and RO, he stressed.

Before the judo of the Olympic Games, from July 27 to August 3, the International Federation approved a program until June and includes, among other important first-level tournaments, seven Grand Slams (4) and Grand Prix (3).

Work is also being done on the preparation of parajudocas for the Paralympic Games, scheduled to take place from August 28 to September 8.

At the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Cuba finished in 14th place in the medal table by country (7-3-5) and judo contributed a silver with Idalis Ortiz, who won her fourth medal (1-2-1), while In the Paralympics, the largest of the Antilles was on step 35 (4-1-1) and the parajudocas did not win medals.
