Crisis at FC Lok Leipzig: Demands for President’s Removal Throw Club’s Future into Turmoil

This presents FC Lok Leipzig, successor to the first German football champions VfB Leipzig, with the biggest test of recent years. The future of the cult club is at stake.

In an incendiary letter to the FC Lok supervisory board, 21 signatories demand that President Torsten Kracht (56) be removed from office. The explosive power contained in these two A4 pages becomes clear when you look at the names of the authors – including Treasurer Bernd Lang, Vice President Stephan Guth, Lok supervisory board Mike Scheffler, GmbH supervisory board members Petra Brumme and Michael Schauer as well as the managing directors Martin Mieth and Alexander Voigt.

The demand for the dismissal culminates in the letter: “Otherwise we will be forced to immediately stop our volunteer work and terminate closed employment contracts extraordinarily or at the earliest possible date and resign immediately.” Lok, already suffering from sporting problems, would probably be left in a shambles .

The allegations against Kracht are described as follows: “For several months we have been watching the developments surrounding our beloved club with great unease. This has been brought to parts of the supervisory board from various sides since August, with an urgent request for solutions and support. Unfortunately this was unsuccessful.”

Kracht rejects allegations

Criticism is primarily directed at Kracht’s leadership style: “Decisions are made by Torsten Kracht on his own initiative, without taking into account the advice of other executive board members and experienced employees. In addition, Torsten Kracht’s word alone seems to be considered law, with no appreciation for the long-standing contributions of individual employees and no understanding of the club’s processes. This is accompanied by a difficult tone, authoritarian instructions and unfounded allegations.”

It continues: “Uncoordinated statements in the press, as well as WhatsApp status reports and Instagram stories with ambiguous locomotive references, give the impression of a president who speaks more like a frustrated teenager and packs his messages into cryptic quotes – for the office “The president of our football club is unacceptable.”

One goes – or 21? Lok Leipzig facing the ultimate test!

It currently seems impossible for Kracht, who has just recovered from a heart attack, to resign. He has the backing of many fans – also because he has rightly been critical of the work of coach and sports director Almedin Civa for months and wants to install a sports director in Toni Wachsmuth. Kracht has now also spoken out: “I take the allegations very seriously. Please be assured that I will be happy to contact each and every signatory of the letter in the coming days if I have not already done so.”

He continues: “45 years ago I played my first youth league game for this club. I love this club and, to the best of my knowledge, I have always acted for our Loksche. I accepted my position after careful consideration, with the motivation to sustainably develop our Loksche as a team player. I therefore expressly reject the allegations, but am self-reflective enough to accept objective criticism.”

What’s next?

The hope for dialogue remains. The supervisory board, handicapped by an accident involving chairman Olaf Winkler, is holding back for the time being and shying away from taking a clear position.

Also possible: There will be a vote at the club’s upcoming general meeting (January 27th) if a member has this item put on the agenda beforehand.

The fact is: Lok has to close this mega construction site as quickly as possible in order to remain able to act and not completely endanger its existence. Many fans are already longing for the quiet and objective times under ex-boss Thomas Löwe…
