Convenience Store Clerk in Peterborough Faces Court After Alleged Thief Beating

A convenience store clerk from Peterborough, Ontario, will have to answer in court after beating an alleged thief with a baseball bat.

According to Peterborough police on Tuesday, a robber entered a convenience store armed with a baseball bat around 2:30 a.m. on the night of January 4-5.

While the store clerk was serving a customer, the suspect approached and demanded money while brandishing his bat.

“A scuffle ensued and the clerk was hit by the bat, before he was able to grab it and take it away from the suspect who fled the business,” police described.

However, far from stopping there, the 22-year-old clerk followed the 37-year-old thief outside and hit him several times with the baseball bat. The attacker-turned-victim suffered significant head injuries and had to be sent to a Toronto hospital, police said.

As a result, both men face charges. The clerk will have to defend himself against a charge of aggravated assault, while the thief will have to answer to counts of theft, assault with a weapon and possession of a weapon.
