Antioquia coach Víctor Luna, 64 years old, who was champion with the DIM in 2002, died in Medellín after suffering a heart attack.
Luna, who played as a player for Atlético Nacional, América de Cali and the Colombian National Team, was also an outstanding coach who forged his career on the bench of teams in the Colombian and Ecuadorian leagues.
The Antioquia coach, Carlos Navarrete, confirmed to EL COLOMBIANO the death of coach Víctor Luna, this Sunday morning in Medellín.
Champion as a footballer with Atlético Nacional in 1981 and with América de Cali in 1986, Luna began as a coach with Independiente Medellín in 1977, a team he coached five times and won champion in 2002.
In his experience as a coach he was also in Barcelona in Ecuador in 2004, then in Once Caldas in Manizales in 2005, he returned to Ecuador to guide Macará in 2005-2006 and returned to Colombia to go through the banks of Independiente Medellín 2006-2007 and 2011) and Atlético Bucaramanga in 2008.
His last appearance in Colombian football was in 2020 when he was part of the Junior de Barranquilla coaching staff, as an assistant to one of his football ‘sons’, the Antioquian Luis Amaranto Perea.
Luna is well remembered by DIM fans, since he gave them the star after 45 years of waiting, and to the semifinal of the Copa Libertadores in 2003, he is also recognized in football for his human and professional quality.
His friends remember him as a studious, disciplined coach, who was always one step ahead in his knowledge of football, its game systems and training methods.
