Célia Šašić on the national team and DFB: “We have lost our football identity”

Ms. Šašić, what do you think of when you think of Franz Beckenbauer?

Of the 2006 World Cup. And of the aura that he radiated. For me, for my generation, he was suddenly omnipresent. I never got to know him personally, but in the weeks of the World Cup I, we all were able to experience him.

How do you remember these weeks?

I was already a national player, which meant I was always able to watch games in the stadium. And I turned 18 during the World Cup. It was a perfect fit: free time, driving license, just go. When I read on Monday evening that Franz Beckenbauer had died, I thought again about the feeling that existed in 2006.
