Borussia Dortmund’s coach Edin Terzic breaks with a resolution. He takes an unambiguous stand against the right-wing extremist excesses in Germany. The BVB coach himself has a migrant background – and sees the time as having come to “show his colors”.

Dortmund football teacher Edin Terzic has taken a stand in the current discussion about democracy and right-wing extremism. “When I started as a coach, I actually decided not to comment on political issues. However, we all have to show our colors on this issue. “If you know my background, if you know our dressing room and our staff and see how many guys we have with a migrant background, it is extremely important that we all position ourselves,” said the 41-year-old on Friday.

Terzic was born in October 1982 in Menden to a Croatian mother and a Bosnian father. “In Croatia and Bosnia I am the German, here I am the foreigner. At some point I decided for myself that my nationality is football. I believe that in the field of sport – whether as a coach or player – we should use this media presence to encourage everyone to clearly show their colors. And this color is colorful,” said Terzic.

Other Bundesliga protagonists have recently made similar comments to Terzic. His Freiburg trainer colleague Christian Streich called for people to take part in the nationwide demonstrations against right-wing extremism. The background to the discussions is a meeting between right-wing radicals and AfD politicians in a Potsdam villa, which was publicized by the media company Correctiv.

Racism scandal at RB Leipzig

Leipzig coach Marco Rose had already taken a clear stance against right-wing extremism and racism last week. “I believe that it is very important to stand up against stupidity and right-wing extremism in all forms. “I think it’s good that people are doing that, that they’re clearly showing their colors and taking to the streets,” said the 47-year-old. “It’s important to take a stand against it and make a statement and not trivialize it.”

This week, his club found itself at the center of a racism scandal among the club’s youth ranks. Rose praised the quick intervention of the youth players this Friday. “Big compliments to the boys because this issue was clarified in the dressing room. Someone stood up there and said it doesn’t work that way. The club then drew the necessary and correct consequences,” he said.

Le Pen distances himself from the AfD

The French right-wing populist Marine Le Pen distances herself from the AfD after the controversial meeting with right-wing extremists in Potsdam. At a press conference in Paris, she threatened consequences for the joint group in the EU Parliament.

On Thursday, Leipzig kicked out two U19 players who had blasphemed a teammate and made derogatory comments about his skin color. The 47-year-old made it clear once again that the two released players will have no future at RB. He also advocated that the duo should learn from their mistake. “We are of course happy to provide advice in order to develop knowledge, to develop a feeling for what they actually said and did, in order to then do it better in the future,” said Rose.

The coach drew a parallel to the many demonstrations against right-wing extremism that are currently taking place in Germany. “We’re taking to the streets to fight this and I think it’s right and important that we stick with it,” said Rose. Last week he had already called for people to defend themselves against right-wing extremist tendencies in Germany.
