For the first time in twelve years, spectators were admitted to the derby between rivals West Bromwich and Wolverhampton. The fans of both clubs are enemies. There were massive riots at the FA Cup. Even corner flags were used as weapons.

The duel between West Bromwich Albion and Wolverhampton Wanderers is widely regarded as the most eccentric of all English derbies. But on Sunday evening it was also the bloodiest. Nasty brawls overshadowed the game. The two cities are almost 15 kilometers apart and the FA Cup game was the first meeting between the two arch-rivals with permitted spectators in twelve years. But that was obviously not a good idea.

The area north and west of Birmingham is called “The Black Country” because coal mining was once particularly intensive here. That’s why the explosive duel between the two teams is known as the “Black Country Derby”, this time in the fourth round of the cup. Second division team (Bromwich) against Premier League club (Wolverhampton), it could have been an exciting showdown. But football became a minor matter.

There were stadium announcements, but they did not immediately help calm the situation. Some professionals tried to de-escalate the situation, but in vain. Some of them had already brought their families from the stands. Albion defender Kyle Bartley was seen holding his daughter on the pitch after he rushed to get her out of harm’s way.

Six arrests – and more to come

The players from both teams initially stood on the sidelines in shock, but went into the dressing room after the referee team decided to stop the game. Players called their families to make sure they escaped safely. After a 39-minute compulsory break, the game at The Hawthorns stadium was restarted by referee Thomas Bramall. From then on, police and stewards patrolled almost the entire edge of the pitch. After Pedro Neto’s first goal (38′) before the break, rockets flew into the area of the celebrating away fans.
