Australian Open | Indian tennis player Bopanna will be the oldest doubles number one at the age of 43

Among the top four in Melbourne, Bopanna passed with homegrown Matthew Ebden after today’s victory over Argentines Máximo González and Andrés Molteni 6:4, 7:6 (7:5). On Thursday, they will play for the final with the Czech-Chinese duo Tomáš Macháč and Zhang Ch’chen.

On Monday, Bopanna will replace American Rajeev Ram, who was number one the year before last when he was 38 years old, as the oldest doubles number one. It was with Ram and Briton Joe Salisbury that the Indian-Australian pair lost the final at the recent Adelaide tournament.

Bopanna was ranked third highest in the doubles rankings so far. He won 24 doubles tournaments during his career. With last year’s triumph in Indian Wells, he became the oldest winner of the doubles competition at the Masters tournament and also holds the record of being the oldest tennis player to win a match at the Masters Tournament.
