Australian Open 2023: No Change in ATP Rankings Despite Grand Slam Triumphs

As strange as it may seem after a Grand Slam, and despite the triumph of a Jannik Sinner who continues to grow, the positions of honor in the ATP ranking will not undergo any type of change once the Australian Open is over. The most threatened was Carlos Alcaraz, who at times saw his second position in the classification in great danger, since Daniil Medvedev would have surpassed him by winning the final, but the comeback of the 22-year-old Italian helped the Spaniard, who retains the second drawer of the podium. Carlitos, however, is somewhat distant from Novak Djokovic, who maintains first place in the ranking and is preparing to begin his 410th week at the top of the table, a record that only increases.

With 2,000 champion points, and after only defending last year’s round of 16, Sinner gets an important haul of points in Melbourne, leaving him with 8,310 in fourth position in the ranking. It is not enough, the only thing, to climb positions, and what he is chasing is his rival in the final, Medvedev, who added 1,210 points to remain third with a total of 8,765 to his credit. The main beneficiary of the Russian’s defeat was Alcaraz, who remains second with 9,255. A victory for the Muscovite would have caused him to exchange positions with El Palmar, who remains the main pursuer of Djokovic.

The great advantage for Carlitos is that in this Australian Open he did not defend any points since he missed the last edition due to injury. For this reason, the quarterfinals achieved in the oceanic country bring the Murcian 400 more points to reach 9,255. He thus reduces the disadvantage with Nole, who loses 1,200 points by not being able to defend his crown in Melbourne and falls to 9,855. That is, 600 points separate the El Palmar tennis player from recovering number one in the world. It won’t be easy for Charly, who now faces a calendar in which he can earn few points, basically because he defends many: the 250 as champion in Buenos Aires, where he will reappear in a couple of weeks, the 300 as runner-up in Rio de Janeiro, 1,000 for winning Indian Wells and another 360 for being a semifinalist in Miami. Djokovic, however, does not defend anything in the two American Masters 1,000, in which he could not participate in 2023, and before that tour he barely retains 180 points from last year’s semifinals in Dubai.

There is no change in the top six positions in the ranking, which remain the same as before the start of the Aussie major: Djokovic, Alcaraz, Medvedev, Sinner, Rublev and Zverev, in that order. The first alteration appears in seventh place, which Holger Rune rises to despite his early elimination. The victim is Stefanos Tsitsipas, finalist last year, who loses 1,000 points and falls to 10th place. He is also overtaken by Hubert Hurkacz, who with eighth position achieves the best mark of his life, and Taylor Fritz who returns to the top-10.

Nadal collapses again

Upon his return in Adelaide, Rafa Nadal regained some of the ground he had lost during a year of absence. The champion of 22 Grand Slams returned to compete when he was ranked 672 in the ATP rankings, and upon reaching the quarterfinals he jumped to number 451 with 95 points, an increase of 221 positions. He will have to ‘start over’ in Manacor, since, by missing this edition of the Australian Open due to a new injury, he loses the 45 points he had from last year. With 40 under his belt, Nadal will be 638th in the world this Monday, although with nothing left to defend for the remainder of the year, in a descent of 192 steps. It should not be a big problem for Rafa, who will enter the tournaments with an invitation or with a protected ranking (like in Doha), beyond the fact that his plan to enter high positions as soon as possible is delayed to avoid dangerous pairings in the first rounds of each event.

Alejandro Davidovich remains the second Spaniard in the ranking, rising one place to 23rd in the world, despite his defeat in the second round in Melbourne. To find another Navy player you have to go down to 65th position, where Roberto Carballés appears, who loses two places. Jaume Munar is 75th, Bernabé Zapata 80th and Albert Ramos 86th, while Pedro Martínez, 99th, and Roberto Bautista, 101st, who fell 29 positions, dance in the top-100 barrier. Pablo Carreño, who defended 45 points in Australia, loses 410 positions and drops to 1,015, with only 11 points to his credit.
