Arsenal’s own goal helps Klopp: Liverpool advance in the FA Cup

An own goal secured Liverpool FC’s place in the fourth round of the FA Cup. The English football club won 2-0 (0-0) on Sunday against record winners FC Arsenal.

The redeeming first goal for coach Jürgen Klopp’s team was scored by Jakub Kiwior, who headed into his own net in the 80th minute. Luis Díaz followed up in stoppage time (90+5). The Reds had previously hit the crossbar of the Arsenal goal twice. The initially better North Londoners around the largely disappointing German international Kai Havertz had once failed at the crossbar.

The outfits in particular provided an unusual picture: for the first time in the club’s history, the Gunners did without their red jersey at a home game. The reason for the all-white jersey was the “No More Red” campaign against knife crime and youth violence. And the guests did not wear their red home jersey out of solidarity; the “Reds” wore purple instead.

City without effort

Defending champions Manchester City progressed effortlessly. Phil Foden (33rd/65th), Julián Álvarez (37th), Ben Jackson (58th/own goal) and Jérémy Doku (74th) scored for the 5-0 (2-0) against second division club Huddersfield Town on Sunday English champions.

While coach Pep Guardiola had to do without star striker Erling Haaland, who still had a foot injury, Kevin De Bruyne, who came on as a substitute in the 57th minute, made his first appearance since mid-August. The attacking midfielder was out for a long time due to a thigh injury.
