Arsenal Denies Protest to PGMOL about Saka, Arteta: Just Chatting

London

Arsenal reportedly protested to the Premier League refereeing body PGMOL regarding the referee’s lack of protection for Bukayo Saka. Mikel Arteta denied this.

Arsenal was mentioned in a number of reports on Thursday (4/1/2024) as having lodged a protest with PGMOL. The Gunners felt that the referees did not provide enough protection for Bukayo Saka, who is the third most fouled player this season.

The 22-year-old winger has been fouled by opponents 87 times in the Premier League. Only Jordan Ayew (Crystal Palace – 117 times) and Bruno Guimaraes (Newcastle United – 92 times) were fouled more often.

The report also sparked criticism from former players. Former Aston Villa striker Gabriel Agbonlahor and former Blackburn Rovers & Chelsea striker Chris Sutton questioned Arsenal’s motives.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta dismissed the news, emphasizing that the meeting that took place was not for the purpose of conveying complaints.

“We had normal conversations with PGMOL, but nothing specific about that. The referees know the tactics of our opponents and know that some players are more targeted, whether it’s because of the way they play, they invite more tackles,” Arteta was quoted as saying. BBC.

“But I think the officials are very aware of that. The wingers attract a lot of fouls and attention from the defenders, that’s normal,” he added.
