Former Australian MotoGP and Superbike rider Anthony Gobert died this Wednesday at the age of 48, “a victim of addiction,” according to the former athlete’s family in a statement.

“My heart breaks as I write this. Anthony passed away late this afternoon. I loved him from the moment he was born until the day he died. Unfortunately, he was a victim of addiction. He tried to get better many times, but he didn’t. he achieved. I am very proud of him and I thank all the good people who helped him,” the former pilot’s family wrote on social networks.

The talented Australian rider enjoyed a brilliant career between 1994 and 2000. He won 8 races and was on the podium 16 times in Superbikes, a championship in which his best overall result was fourth place in 1995 with Kawasaki.

“The World Superbike paddock sends its deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Anthony Gobert. May he rest in peace,” they wrote from the Superbike championship on social networks.

His skill on the motorcycle allowed him to sign for Suzuki in 1997 directly to the 500cc category -equivalent to MotoGP-. However, in the final stretch of the season he tested positive for drugs and was unable to run the final three races. In 1999 he returned to the category with MZ Weber and a year later he ended his adventure in the World Championship riding Modenas as a substitute driver.
