Angry Swedes protest against French equalizer

AFPPrandi scores the equalizer disputed by Sweden

The Swedish Handball Association has filed an official protest after the European Championship semi-finals in Germany. The Swedes were eliminated after extra time by Olympic champion France: (34-30).

The Scandinavians are furious about a moment in the very last second of the match. With the clock showing 60:00, France was allowed to take one more free throw. All Swedish field players formed a wall, but with a hard swipe in the intersection, Elohim Prandi still managed to score.

He made it 27-27 and forced France into extra time.

But it escaped the referees and VAR that Prandi had one foot off the ground at the moment of shooting. This is not allowed with a free throw, so the hit should not have been counted.

WAS

Immediately afterwards, Sweden filed an official protest, which will be handled by handball association EHF at the beginning of the afternoon on Saturday. The Swedes demand that the goal be declared invalid, so that Sweden, rather than France, is in the European Championship final.

“We don’t know where the protest will lead, but we think it is important to stand up for our interests,” Swedish national coach Hanna Fogelström said in the Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet.

Captain Glenn Solberg said he had never been so disappointed. “We have VAR for a reason. In a crucial phase of a big match like this, questionable situations simply have to be looked at.”

Denmark to finals

Later in the evening, Denmark was too strong for host country Germany 29-26 in the other semi-final in Cologne. The European Championship final between France and Denmark will be played on Sunday, as will the battle for bronze between Sweden and Germany.

Unless the EHF’s appeal is honored and Sweden is allowed to play the final.
