Anderlecht’s Second Place Standing in Jupiler Pro League Raises Concerns

RSC Anderlecht is still second in the Jupiler Pro League. Yet purple and white are not really convincing.

After years of misery, Anderlecht is back at the top of the Jupiler Pro League rankings, but according to Paul Van Himst we are still waiting for a real reference match against a top club.

“I have already seen a few good matches at Anderlecht, but in the last three home matches, against Standard, Genk and Cercle, things were already difficult,” said De Zondag.

Van Himst calls the first half against Leuven really bad and it was not good against Union either, even though Anderlecht certainly has very good football players.

“That’s Dolberg too, but he falls back too easily and then you miss a killer in front of goal, one who dares to duel with men like Burgess. That could be Vazquez, yes.”

According to Van Himst, the boys like Thorgan Hazard and Yari Verschaeren who return from injury are also part of the problem.

“The following applies to every sportsman: after a long absence, the first match is good, but then there is a setback. That does play a role. But if everyone gets back to their normal level, they will still play (for the title, ed.), I think.”

Although Union SG must be defeated today, otherwise the gap will be too big to catch up, according to Van Himst.
