Alba Berlin’s Mixed Season: A Record-Breaking Turnaround in Euroleague

So far, Alba Berlin has largely been able to avoid looking into the history books in this mixed season, apart from the eleven-time champions’ biggest home defeat in the Bundesliga history against Central German BC in mid-November. Otherwise, the Berliners’ performances were hardly record-breaking. Alba was only able to win 13 of 34 games before last Friday. After the violent upheaval in the summer, the team mostly had no chance in the Euroleague, especially away from home.

That changed on Friday evening at Asvel Villeurbanne, just outside Lyon – and impressively. In the basement duel of the Euroleague, the previous bottom team, Alba, prevailed over the second-to-last team with 88:63 and thus swapped places. It was not only the first away win in international competition since April, but also the biggest in more than 30 years in European competition. However, the French, who had recently won twice in a row, presented themselves disastrous and not even close to Euroleague level.

The Berlin team was still relieved, especially after a difficult week with four defeats in a row, including a 20-point defeat in Bamberg. Israel Gonzalez even gave a rare laugh in the interview after the game.

When asked what the first away win in nine months meant, Alba’s coach replied: “One more win” – and smiled with satisfaction. Captain Johannes Thiemann said: “I am super proud of everyone in the team that we brought such energy after two double weeks in the Euroleague.”

The strength reserves will also be an important topic on Sunday, because Alba is not granted a break in this absurd game plan. At 3:30 p.m. the Würzburg Baskets will be guests in the Max-Schmeling-Halle and what at first glance looks like a mandatory task turns out to be a big challenge upon closer inspection.

Alba has won all of the last twelve games against the Franconians, but the opponent is coming to Berlin with a lot of momentum. Würzburg won seven games in a row in the BBL and even moved past Alba in the table thanks to this club record. Since Friday evening, however, the Berliners have had a bit more self-confidence again.
