Alba Berlin started 2024 with bankruptcy. Competitor FC Bayern, on the other hand, showed no weakness in Rostock. The Seawolves came back after an early deficit, but in the end they were only able to celebrate a new attendance record.

Alba Berlin suffered a significant defeat in its first game in the Basketball Bundesliga this year. In the eternally young duel with the Bamberg Baskets, the capital city team lost away on Sunday with 77:97 (41:33). The Berliners, who are currently stressed with four competitive games in eight days, gave up the game after the second quarter. It was the fourth defeat in the twelfth league game. Sterling Brown’s 21 points as the guests’ top scorer couldn’t prevent that either.

However, Alba’s Matt Thomas did not want to use the high stress caused by the many games in the Euroleague and the Bundesliga as an excuse. “That shouldn’t have anything to do with it. We have to play better for 40 minutes,” said the Berliner after the game on “Dyn”.

Alba had a promising first quarter. The lead after ten minutes: eight points. And the guests defended their lead in the even second half (18:18).

But after the break, Bamberg caught up and went into the final section with a score of 60:61 from Berlin’s perspective. And there the hosts went on a 6-0 run before Alba coach Israel González took a timeout and then shortened his team’s lead again with five free throws.

In the 105th duel between the two teams, Bamberg continued to hold its own. The hosts extended their lead again and ultimately inflicted a heavy defeat on Alba after the Berliners had celebrated a victory with a triple-digit score against surprise leaders Niners Chemnitz on New Year’s Eve.

Viewer record in Rostock

FC Bayern Basketball, on the other hand, showed no weaknesses in Rostock. In front of a record crowd of 4,832 spectators in the town hall, the Rostock Seawolves lost to the big favorites 85:91 (39:51). The positive news from Rostock’s perspective: Never before have so many spectators watched a Mecklenburg BBL home game as on Sunday.

Chevez Goodwin gave Rostock their first, but also only, lead in the game with a layup, which developed into a three-point festival in the first few minutes. While the hosts only managed one goal in four attempts from distance, Bayern were successful with all of their five throws to date and moved ahead to 15:5.

After narrowly winning the third quarter, the Seawolves were unable to turn the tide in the final period. The hero team fought its way back to 85:91 in the final phase, but in the end had to accept its eighth defeat in the 14th game. The best thrower for Rostock was Tyler Nelson with 17 points.

Bayern are staying close to the top duo of Chemnitz and Ulm, who had already won their games on Saturday. Chemnitz won against Ludwigsburg, Ulm prevailed in Göttingen.
