Ajax wants to break open and extend Jorrel Hato’s contract early at all costs in the coming period. Het Algemeen Dagblad expects that the Amsterdammers will have to make a significant offer to the eighteen-year-old top talent. Hato reportedly wants to be one of the top earners in the selection when signing a new contract.

33-year-old Jordan Henderson was recently recruited by Ajax with much fanfare. The 81-time England international will earn an annual salary of around 4.5 million euros, which makes him, together with Steven Bergwijn and Steven Berghuis, one of the top earners in the Amsterdam team’s selection.

Hato hopes to join them. The management of the eighteen-year-old center defender has been in discussions with Ajax for some time about an extension of his contract. The left-footed made his debut in the main squad at the beginning of 2023 and eventually played quietly in the starting line-up. The counter now stands at 41 official matches in Ajax 1.

Arsenal and Chelsea, among others, are said to have Hato high on the shortlist, but Ajax hopes to keep the talent on board. Mike Verweij, club watcher for De Telegraaf, reported earlier this month that Ajax is close to reaching an agreement in principle with Hato on a new contract.

The AD commented on Saturday morning that, in addition to the transfer of Henderson, the Amsterdam team will probably incur a ‘significant cost item’ in the coming months with the contract extension of Hato.

“The Dutch international is currently still playing with a youth contract, but he will also want to join the top earners. The rule also applies to him that his new salary is linked to participation in the Champions League.”

Since last year, Ajax has organized its salary structure differently. “The club’s rule is that the remuneration of players and staff varies depending on whether or not they participate in the Champions League. Whether or not a million-dollar ball determines a third of the salary.” Bergwijn and Berghuis, who were recruited in 2022 and 2021 respectively, ‘get away with the dance’ because they fall outside Ajax’s introduction of this construction.
