2023 African Cup of Nations: Nigeria and Egypt Stumble in Group Stage Matches

Nigeria and Egypt, who are strong candidates to win the 2023 African Cup of Nations, both stumbled in the first match of the group phase.

Napoli striker Victor Osimhen’s goal was not enough to help Nigeria beat Equatorial Guinea.

In fact, Nigeria had to fall behind first against Equatorial Guinea in the 2023 African Cup of Nations Group A match at the Stade Alassane Ouattara, Ivory Coast, Sunday (14/1/2024).

The Nigeria vs Equatorial Guinea match finished with a score of 1-1. As a result, Nigeria, which got one point, is below hosts Ivory Coast, who topped Group A thanks to their victory over Guinea-Bissau.

Egypt experienced a similar fate to Nigeria. The most successful team in the African Cup of Nations with seven titles was only able to draw with Mozambique in the first match of Group B.

Egypt almost lost if Mohamed Salah didn’t score a penalty in the 90+7th minute.

In fact, Egypt started the match well after opening the scoring thanks to Mostafa Mohamed’s goal in the 2nd minute.

However, Mozambique recovered and took a 2-1 lead via goals from Witi Quembo (56′) and Clesio Bauque (58′).

Salah then saved Egypt via his penalty goal in injury time and ensured the match was a 2-2 draw.

The top of Group B of the 2023 African Cup of Nations is now occupied by Cape Verde who made a surprise by beating Ghana 2-1 on Monday (15/1/2023) early morning WIB.

Cape Verde won thanks to goals from Jairo Monteiro (17′) and Garry Rodrigues (90+2′). Meanwhile, one goal from Ghana was presented by Alexander Djiku (56′).
