Zion Williamson’s Contract: Unsecured Future and Weight-Based Guarantees

Zion Williamson’s contract is not guaranteed for the last three seasons, according to the journalist from The Athletic Mike Vorkunov. The number one in the 2019 draft missed more than 22 games last year, which activated a clause in his contract that automatically makes his guaranteed salary between the 2025-26 and 2027-28 seasons non-guaranteed.

This means, first of all, that the Pelicans could get rid of him without any type of financial penalty or salary commitment during said period. And if Williamson misses significant time this season he could see his salary reduced for next year as well, according to the same journalist.

To recover these guarantees, Williamson will have to overcome several ‘checkpoints’ during the 2024-25 academic year. If the Pelicans star maintains his weight within the limits set by the organization, 20% of his salary will be guaranteed for the 2025-26 season. An additional 40% will be guaranteed if he plays at least 41 games, while the remaining guarantees apply if he exceeds the barrier of 51 and 61 games.

To guarantee salaries for the 2026-27 and 2027-28 campaigns, these same conditions must be met in the immediately preceding season.

Zion has only missed five games this season, so, for now, his trajectory is correct to secure the amount of the contract he signed in July 2022 at a rate of five years and $231 million. His averages this season rise to 22.0 points, 5.8 rebounds and 4.6 assists in a total of 23 games. During his four years in the NBA he only played more than 60 games on one occasion.
