Still undefeated in the league, confidently in the DFB Cup: Bayer Leverkusen is riding the wave of success. Its creator is coach Xabi Alonso. This arouses desire among the competition, which attracts top clubs. He comments cautiously.

Bayer Leverkusen’s successful coach Xabi Alonso, who is traded at Real Madrid and also FC Bayern, has neither confirmed nor denied an exit clause in his contract with the Werkself that runs until 2026. “These are contractual contents,” said the 42-year-old Spaniard in an interview with Movistar +. “I feel very, very comfortable here at the moment.”

Most recently it was said that Alonso may not have a clause in his contract, but he does have a gentlemen’s agreement with Bayer that allows him to move to an absolutely top club. While at Real he could succeed Carlo Ancelotti, who is likely to move to Brazil as national coach, FC Bayern is also said to be closely following the coaching career of its ex-professional. The Spanish journalist José Álvarez recently reported on the TV show “El Chiringuito de Jugones” that he had the information that Alonso’s commitment to the German record champions was certain from next summer.

What makes Alonso interesting for the heavyweights of international football is his outstanding work in Leverkusen. There he took up his first position as a professional coach in October 2022 and led the team to the top of the Bundesliga table. “There are a lot of young coaches here in Germany and I knew it was the right step,” said Alonso, explaining his commitment to the rather tranquil Leverkusen. “The first few months were about regaining self-confidence.”

The biggest challenge at the moment is “to keep the level high. We don’t want to go low, but we still have a lot of room for improvement. You have to find the balance between ambition and moderation. We have a lot of players who still need experience,” explained Alonso. Football in Germany is very different from that in Spain or England, says the 2010 World Champion and European Champion in 2008 and 2012. “The fans have a much more direct influence. The people are very enthusiastic.”

Bayer is playing confidently not only in the league, but also in the DFB Cup. The befitting 3-1 win against the second division team SC Paderborn brought them into the quarter-finals – only VfB Stuttgart and Borussia Mönchengladbach from the Bundesliga managed that. On the other hand, the following applies: record winner FC Bayern is out, defending champion RB Leipzig is out, runner-up Borussia Dortmund is out.

But Alonso warns: “There are always surprises in the cup.” And then the Basque explains why he particularly warns against the second division teams: “I see the quality, they play good football. And the cup is a different competition.” But the second division teams are probably the smaller threat for Bayer. The bigger one is the Africa Cup in January, when goal scorer Victor Boniface, the set defenders Odilon Kossounou and Edmond Tapsoba as well as Nathan Tella and Amine Adli will be missing five players for up to a month – and thus perhaps also in the quarter-finals, which are still to be drawn.

Then it will finally become clear how much Xabi Alonso is ready as a coach for bigger problems and challenging tasks. So far there is little reason to doubt this.
