Wembanyama misses game against Bucks

SAN ANTONIO (AP) — San Antonio Spurs rookie Victor Wembanyama will miss Tuesday’s game against Milwaukee due to right ankle soreness, which will postpone his first matchup with Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo.

San Antonio waived Wembanyama on Monday, a day after he had 17 points and 13 rebounds in 31 minutes of the Spurs’ 146-110 loss to the New Orleans Pelicans.

The 7-foot-3 (2.20-meter) Wembanyama was the first overall pick in the draft. He had expressed his desire to face Antetokounmpo, twice named the NBA’s Most Valuable Player.

“He is probably one of the players I have studied the most,” the Frenchman commented on Sunday regarding the Greek. “I love the way he plays, because he is always aggressive and instills fear in opponents. I will really try to follow many of his examples. I’m very excited to play against the Bucks. He is going to be very very interesting.”

Wembanyama has played in three games since Dec. 12, when he sprained his ankle against Houston. Tuesday’s game will be the second missed this season.

Wembanyama’s double-double against New Orleans was the 19-year-old’s eighth in a row, surpassing the record of seven by a teenager, set by Dwight Howard in 2005.

Wembanyama averages 19 points, 11 rebounds, three blocks and 2.7 assists. It has been one of the few positive aspects of the season for San Antonio, which will enter Tuesday’s game after losing 19 of 20 games.
