Press release from December 27, 2023

Shortly before Christmas, the Association of Municipal Councils (VGR) met for its last meeting of the year. In addition to the budget and the economic plans of the works, sports honors, the continued existence of the community sister plus, the land use plan and flood prevention were on the agenda.

Montabaur. Three golds and many, many kilometers. At the sports awards ceremony in the local council in Montabaur, Lucie Bäcker from Montabaur, Anja Fachbach from Kadenbach and Marius Böttcher, also from Kadenbach, were honored for their outstanding achievements. 14-year-old Lucie Bäcker won gold and silver in the individual competition with the team at the German Duathlon Championships. She brought home many more awards and victories this year. In the duathlon, the disciplines of running, cycling and running are completed one after the other.

Triathlete Anja Fachbach also racks up a lot of kilometers year after year. In the summer of 2023 she took first place at the Ironman European Championships for women in Frankfurt am Main. To do this she had to swim 3.8 kilometers, cycle 180 kilometers and finally run a marathon of 42.2 kilometers. It only took her 9:56 hours. In previous years she has already achieved several titles at national and international competitions.

In the Judo Ü30 age group, Marius Böttcher took first place at the German Individual Heavyweight Championships. For Böttcher, who has been active in judo for many years, this gold medal is another award in his extensive collection. There was a lot of applause for the three top athletes in the VGR and a blue-gray trophy for the shelf.

Community nurse plus
Good news for all seniors in the VG Montabaur: The community nurse plus advisory service will be continued – initially until December 31, 2024. In the meantime, the concept will be revised. Not only the general conditions and financing are then put to the test, but also the specific task description and the definition of the target group. The council wants to decide on the future of the project in the fall. After a controversial discussion, the national accounts finally decided this unanimously.

All groups highlighted the good work and great commitment of Sr. Barbara Spiegelhoff, who has been active as a community sister plus since June 2021. She is employed by the Caritas Association Westerwald-Rhein-Lahn, which is the VG’s cooperation partner in the project. The council criticized the state government’s handling of the community nurse plus (a program run by the state RLP) in many ways. The Ministry of Social Affairs had repeatedly changed the funding guidelines at short notice and reduced funding. That is why the main and finance committee initially spoke out against continuing the community nurse plus in the preliminary consultation.

Mayor Ulrich Richter-Hopprich pointed out that the VG has other offers for seniors such as the generation office, pension advice and vhs courses. “The local communities are also very active with offers for this age group. There are senior citizens’ meetings and organized neighborhood help in most places.”

Land use plan
The local community of Nentershausen would like to expand its commercial area “In den Wolfen – Am Hohen Rain” and is currently adapting the corresponding development plan. In this context, it was noticeable that a small part of the expansion area did not comply with the VG Montabaur land use plan. In order to create legal clarity here, the local community has applied to change the land use plan at this point. The VGR supports the local community’s concerns and has now formally initiated the 22nd amendment process for the land use plan.

Flood prevention
The local community of Niederelbert is often at risk from flooding due to its valley location and its three streams. In 2019, she therefore had a local flood and heavy rain prevention concept drawn up. In this concept, various measures were listed that are intended to defuse the threat situation in the area. Some of this has already been implemented. However, a central problem arises from the Stelzenbach, whose water catchment area includes Welschneudorf, Oberelbert and Niederelbert. A flood retention basin between Oberelbert and Niederelbert could collect the incoming water so that it does not rush unchecked into the town.

A feasibility study will now determine where exactly the pool could be built, what size is sensible and feasible and what the construction will cost. In its responsibility for third-order waters (this is how the Stelzenbach is classified), the VG has now commissioned a feasibility study. (PM)
