John van ‘t Schip hopes to have Steven Bergwijn and Brian Brobbey at his disposal against AEK Athens, he told Ajax TV. For the former, he was still a question mark before Tuesday’s training, while there also seems to be some doubt about the striker’s fitness.

“Brobbey, that’s what we’re going to do now…”, Van ‘t Schip begins, with which he seems to want to say that he is looking at the striker’s employability during the coming training sessions. ‘We had two reasonable days of rest, during which everyone was able to recover. Bergwijn is still a bit of a question mark for today’s training (Tuesday, ed.), but I expect him to be there on Thursday. If that can’t be the case for ninety minutes, we hope he can be there to start or substitute.’

Anton Gaaei also recently struggled with his fitness and the coach also spoke about him. “Gaaei is also on the way back,” says a satisfied head coach. ‘He is training again today, so in principle he is back. If he doesn’t get a response today, he will be available again.’

Ajax goes for the win

Van ‘t Schip’s words make it clear what Ajax has to do against AEK Athens on Thursday. ‘We want to continue in Europe, so you have to win it. It is important for Ajax and also for the development of the boys. We have to go for the win. That really has to be the case, because only the profit counts.’

“Experience-wise it is important,” the former club player then explains about the importance for the development of Ajax’s players. ‘The matches in Brighton and Marseille brought different circumstances and different pressure. The more you can play those kinds of matches, the better it is for the development of the boys.’
