UniMe SSD Admitted to National Serie A Baseball Championship for the Blind and Visually Impaired

The UniMe SSD admitted to the National Baseball Serie A for the Blind and Visually Impaired

With the meeting held via videoconference on 4 December, the Italian Baseball League for the Blind and Visually Impaired (LIBCI) made official with a unanimous vote the admission of the SSD UniMe to the coveted National Serie A Baseball championship for the blind. A historic and prestigious result achieved for the university team which, as also underlined by Silvia Bosurgi, President of SSD UniMe: “It fills us with joy and satisfaction. This project of ours, developed in just under two years, now takes on a further notable social significance, representing the transition from an amateur commitment to competitive participation at a national level. An important step forward that rewards the foresight of the project, as well as the passion and competence of the staff who are part of the sector”.

The next Serie A tournament, whose formula has not yet been defined, will start next spring, when some historic and renowned teams on the Italian scene will make their debut: the Patrini Malnate, the Lampi Milano, the Thunders Five Milano, the Leonessa Brescia , Fortitudo Bologna White Sox, Fiorentina, Roma all Blinds and Thurpos Cagliari. To these will be added Messina and, most likely, also Blindkaralis, the new Cagliari team that should be admitted to the next championship.

“The result achieved of being able to play in Serie A was only possible thanks to the perseverance of the whole group, from the technicians to the assistants to the athletes – says Emilia Ammirato, coach of the team – a choral work which in a short time led us to deal with more famous teams that have been playing for several years. The definitive springboard was certainly the victory at the Torneo Esordienti in Bollate, last September, and then the final act in our home in October with the dispute of the Torneo dello Strait, on the occasion of which the LIBCI with its delegates had the opportunity to verify the team’s latest steps forward. I thank President Silvia Bosurgi for the trust she gave to me and Luisa Colosi in carrying on the activity. I also thank Prof. Fiammetta Conforto and Prof. Carlo Giannetto for their closeness to our project and, finally, Prof. Marika Margiotta for integrating our project into the broader one of the SSD UnIme called “Skill In”.

“The teamwork and stubbornness of our athletes gave us the great satisfaction of having the opportunity to play in the top league of baseball for the blind – continues Luisa Colosi, manager of the team – we are proud of our athletes who, ever since once the news leaked, they made it clear that they will work even harder than before. As a technician I am proud of the work done and I thank SSD UNIME for the opportunity it gave us.”

SSD UNIME is therefore preparing for an exciting season in the National Serie A, ready to demonstrate that passion, dedication and teamwork can overcome any obstacle.
