Umana Reyer Venezia comes back from -22 and wins a spectacular victory against UNAHOTELS Reggio Emilia in overtime in Round 6 of Group A of the IBSA Next Gen Cup 2023/24. The Emilians started strong in defense and capitalized on some recoveries by finishing at the rim with Camara and I.Suljanovic, while the Orogranatas relied on the centers from the line of Vanin and Iannuzzi to break the deadlock (6-4). However, UNAHOTELS continues to show great defensive intensity, the Suljanovic brothers put on a show at the rim and from afar and together with the big man Yadde they seal a great 16-0 break interrupted only by Vanin’s attack of 20-6.
After other spells from Imran and Omer Suljanovic for +16 Reggio Emilia, Pellizzon goes up with penetrating shots and shakes Umana Reyer, then leaving the winning penetration to Munari which brings the orogranata even closer at 24-12. At the end of the quarter, I.Suljanovic reignites UNAHOTELS but Bonivento and Pellizzon continue the good Venetian moment, propitiating the 26-16 after 10′ of the match. Subsequently, Iannuzzi also lights up in addition to the usual Munari while the Emilians once again take advantage of the flashes of I.Suljanovic and a purposeful Adebowale in the paint to still keep Venice at a distance (29-22).
Thanks to a triple by Pastorelli and a three-point play by I.Suljanovic, Reggio Emilia stopped the orogranata inertia inspired by a super Munari (also assisting the big men Vanin and Macrì), before Bonaretti and Mainini restored the situation with a bomb the double-digit advantage of UNAHOTELS (39-28). Then it was again up to the Suljanovic brothers to take back the stage, updating Reggio’s maximum lead together with Pastorelli to +19, before Presutto and Pellizzon put the orogranata team back on track with their penetrations (48-32). At the end of the half, O.Suljanovic scores a beautiful, talented basket and Camara beats the siren to score the winning counterattack of 52-34.
The second half opens with the winning free throws scored by O.Suljanovic and Camara for +22 UNAHOTELS but Venezia still doesn’t give up and scores a break of 2-12 inspired by a fiery Iannuzzi who also assists Vanin (58-46). The incursions of the Suljanovic brothers interrupt the Venetian comeback to a minimum but Iannuzzi is now unstoppable, Munari also scores a stop-and-shoot dribble and two accelerations by Pellizzari put Reyer back 5 points behind (62-57). A super triple from I.Suljanovic and Camara’s flash rekindle the red and whites, Munari and the sniper Iannuzzi, however, do not stop scoring and then Lusetti relaunches the UNAHOTELS extension with the bomb of 70-62.
At the end of the quarter, Macrì elbows his way into the area and scores the basket which keeps Umana there 70-64 after 30′. A jumper and another great bomb from Munari subsequently bring Venezia to -1 but the comeback is not completed as Camara takes back the stage at the rim and O.Suljanovic scores 8 consecutive points which put Reggio Emilia back in control of the game (80-69). However, the red and whites are unable to close the contest, Marini and Iannuzzi again with triples and a pair of free throws are worth -4, I.Suljanovic then gets back on his own from the dribble and from the low post, also finding the big Abreu for the 85 -76 with less than 4′ to go.
With a three-point game from Munari, Venezia doesn’t want to give up anyway, Vanin crushes the new -6 after another good incursion from O.Suljanovic, before Iannuzzi from the line and a bomb from Bonivento from the corner seals the 87- 86 which brings Reyer back very close with one minute to go. After another back-and-forth between the Suljanovic brothers and Munari’s free throws from the new -1 orogranata, the Venetian playmaker himself loses a bloody ball 23″ from the end. Reggio Emilia then manages to overcome the opponent’s pressing, Abreu is fouled on a shot and restores the +2. Decisive possession Munari serves Iannuzzi who scores the basket at the rim which ties the game at 90-90 with 1.1″ to play. O.Suljanovic subsequently fails to shoot, the same goes for Iannuzzi and the match thus goes to overtime.
Vanin, suffering a foul, allows Reyer to complete the overtaking, Camara and Lusetti fail to respond but Iannuzzi does not end the contest. Camara thus took advantage of the opportunity to equalize from the line at 92 but Marini was assisted by Vanin for the bomb of the new +3 orogranata. A foul suffered by O.Suljanovic further shortens the disadvantage for UNAHOTELS, the Pellizzon – Vanin axis combines for a support but O.Suljanovic scores the bomb to make it 97-97. Munari, however, is not there and goes all over the field and supports the new Venetian +2, Camara misses an attempt from the arc and the pick and roll Iannuzzi – Vanin puts two possessions between the teams (97-101). Another spectacular bomb from O.Suljanovic still keeps everything alive for -1 with 20″ to go, Vanin then places a super dunk (assisted by Iannuzzi) and this time O.Suljanovic is no longer able to equalize the match.
