Tough EuroCup Loss for Hamburg Towers: Coach Remains Proud Despite Defeat

For the Towers, the second half of the EuroCup began the same way as the first half: with a defeat against the Ukrainian top team Prometey Slobozhanske – 83:97 (35:52).

Hamburg’s basketball players have made significant progress in the Bundesliga – they continue to lose in the second highest European competition. Even though it was six points closer this time than at the beginning of October…

“The margin for error is very narrow. We have to learn from it,” said coach Benka Barloschky (35). “But I think we’ve gotten better in almost every aspect of the game. That’s why I’m still proud of the boys. They tried, they fought.”

Because of the snow chaos, only 1,222 fans got into the island park against the “Titans”, who had moved to Riga/Latvia because of the war – negative crowds! Even the fan club couldn’t be heard. Head drummer Harald Dreyer (70) slipped on the black ice in the morning and injured his thumb. The result: a tactless tragedy atmosphere.

Barloschky also missed the super fan: “Greetings go out, we really appreciate him. He might have squeezed out a little more today.”

After an ice-cold start from the Towers, Prometey pulled away to 45:27 (17th). The game was decided. Even though the towers never gave up, they showed character and came back with an 11-0 run in the final quarter. And so the fans warmed up.

One of the few with insight was Lukas Meisner (28). Six weeks after breaking his nose, he played without a mask again for the first time and was the top scorer with 16 points alongside Will Christmas (26). Meisner: “It was liberating without a mask and it’s good to be able to see completely again. The way we made the game close again at the end is a sign that we definitely learned from the first half of the season.”

Because of the game-free cup weekend, von Barloschky was given two and a half days off after 22 competitive games for the first time since October. “You could clearly see that the team was tired. It was hard for us to generate our energy.”
