The swindler Don Joan reappears and presents himself to Lledoners to enter the prison for the first time

BarcelonaAlbert Cavallé, also known as Don Joan the swindler, appeared this Monday morning at the Lledoners penitentiary to serve a sentence of two years and three months in prison and to respond to two pending search and seizure warrants . It is the first time, after years of judicial journey and several convictions, that Cavallé is behind bars. He had been missing for months. But this Monday he sent a message to his lawyer telling him to stay at a point in Barcelona, where he communicated his decision to stop hiding and turn himself in. Both went by car to Lledoners, where he handed himself in around 12.30pm.

Cavallé had already accumulated five firm sentences in the last six years for defrauding several women, who denounced him for having deceived them while he had a romantic relationship: they left him money that he did not return. The last of these firm sentences (two years and three months in prison) is the result of a compliance agreement that Cavallé himself accepted in order to avoid the nine years in prison that the Prosecutor’s Office and the private prosecution were asking for. He admitted the facts, but he was in for a surprise: unlike what had happened with the four previous sentences, the Barcelona Court refused to suspend the prison sentence he himself had accepted. After that, he went into hiding.

He did not come out of hiding in late May to appear for a pending trial. That’s why he accumulates three arrest warrants (two for the May trial and one to serve the prison sentence), which will now be dropped due to the fact that he has surrendered. Cavallé’s judicial journey, however, will not end here: he has accumulated around thirty complaints in six years and still has six pending trials counting the one that was skipped in May. So far his defense had managed to get the low sentences he had accumulated suspended or commuted to work for the benefit of the community. In addition, justice had always considered each of the complaints independently and this has made it easy for the resulting penalties not to be considered a precedent to be taken into account in the rest of the cases. For this reason he had never gone to prison.
