Testimony Subpoenas Issued for Ja Morant and Family in Civil Lawsuit

Testimony subpoenas have been issued to the Grizzlies’ Ja Morant and his family in a civil lawsuit, according to documents obtained by ESPN.

Subpoenas have been issued for Memphis Grizzlies star Ja Morant and members of his family appear and testify at an upcoming court hearing for a civil lawsuit in Memphis, according to court documents obtained by ESPN.

The lawsuit dates back more than a year and accuses Morant of assaulting a teenager during a basketball game at the player’s home. outside Memphis in July 2022.

An immunity hearing is scheduled to begin Dec. 11 in Shelby County Circuit Court in Memphis, where Morant’s attorneys, seeking to dismiss the case, They will argue that he acted in self-defense by hitting Joshua Holloway, then 17, after Holloway hit Morant in the chin with a basketball. The hearing is expected to last until December 13 and potentially into the following week. A trial could begin in April 2024.

Morant has not yet testified in the case. His own lawyer would question him under oath and Holloway’s lawyer, Rebecca Adelman, would too.

“On behalf of Joshua, we are preparing and will be ready for the hearing,” Adelman told ESPN.

The Grizzlies declined to comment. and Morant’s attorneys did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Morant’s testimony could come about a week before Morant is eligible to return to action for the Grizzlies on Dec. 19 after completing his 25-game suspension by the NBA after video surfaced in May showing Morant pointing a gun. That suspension was followed by an eight-game suspension last season when Morant appeared on video flashing a gun at a Denver-area nightclub in March.

Subpoenas were also issued to Morant’s close friend, Davonte Pack, his father, Tee, and his mother, Jamie, appear and testify at the hearing, along with other friends and witnesses who were present during the July 2022 altercation at Morant’s home.

In addition, summonses were issued for four members of the Sheriff’s Office of Shelby County who investigated the altercation.

Some of the subpoenas were issued to members of Morant’s inner circle who have already been deposed in the case, including Tee Morant (the subpoenas have not yet been served, but are expected to do so within days).

Morant himself was scheduled to be deposed and answer questions about the matter under oath before a judge issued a stay of the case this summer after Morant’s attorneys attempted to dismiss the case by seeking to apply a Tennessee state law to ” “defend your position.”
