Steven Berghuis Voices Frustrations Over Arbitration Decision in RKC Waalwijk vs. Ajax Match

was annoyed by an arbitration decision in the match between RKC Waalwijk and Ajax. Although much was said afterwards about a foul by Yassin Oukili, which Ajax supporters felt was punished too lightly, Berghuis was especially irritated by a corner kick that was not given in injury time.

In the third minute of injury time, Ajax thought they were entitled to a corner, but linesman Maarten Ketting decided otherwise. He flagged for a goal kick. Brian Brobbey would have touched the ball last, but Brobbey also made it clear on the field that defender Shawn Adewoye had still touched it in his eyes.

After the match there was a chat between Berghuis and trainer John van ‘t Schip. The attacker was asked at the press conference after the match what they were talking about. “There was one moment when the linesman indicated that it was a back ball, while it was really a corner. I really had the feeling that he did that to get out of the situation, so to make it easier for himself instead of objectively assessing the situation and just giving a corner,” said Berghuis.

“It had been going on for about three or four minutes. I really had the feeling that he thought: backball, then we’re out of here,” the attacker continued about Ketting. “He made the choice to make it easy for himself, I had that feeling. Furthermore, we did it professionally. You shouldn’t think about playing 3-3 here.”
