MADRID, 9 (EUROPA PRESS)

The Spanish men’s badminton team was on the verge of qualifying for the European Team Championship when they fell (3-2) this Saturday against the Netherlands in the last round of the qualifying phase.

Spain, which had started with two 5-0 wins against Hungary and Latvia, lost to the hosts in the decisive point of the last tie in the Dutch town of Arnhem.

The first match pitted Pablo Abián against Mark Caljouw, world number 50 and a regular in BWF World Tour tournaments, with the Spaniard winning 18-21, 24-22 and 21-19. The Netherlands reacted with the victories of Joran Kewwkel over Kike Peñalver (21-17, 19-21 and 19-21) and the powerful doubles formed by Ruben Jille and Robin Tabeling over Jacobo Fernández and Carlos Piris (16-21 and 10-21 ).

Spain clung to its options thanks to Álvaro Leal’s 2-2 victory over Noah Haase (21-13 and 21-16). In the fifth and final game, Rubén García and Kike Peñalver could not beat Ties Van Der Lecq and Brian Wassink despite starting ahead with 18-21.

In this way, Spanish badminton is approaching a historic milestone, as it has been on the verge of qualifying for the first time both the women’s team, which achieved this on Friday in Madrid, and the men’s team, for the European Team Championships.
