San Antonio Spurs Snap 18-Game Losing Streak with Victory Over Short-Handed Los Angeles Lakers

After 18 defeats in a row, the San Antonio Spurs were able to celebrate again against the Los Angeles Lakers. Devin Vassell scored 36 points for the weakened Lakers without Anthony Davis and D’Angelo Russell.

San Antonio Spurs (4-20) – Los Angeles Lakers (15-11) 129:115 (BOXSCORE)

Between November 2nd and yesterday evening there were 18 defeats in a row for the Spurs, the new franchise record was apparently enough for Vassell and his teammates around Victor Wembanyama. “It didn’t feel like a normal win,” Vassell revealed afterwards: “You saw people jumping on the sidelines celebrating. That was something special, that’s a special group. We didn’t think we’d lose so much in a row.”

San Antonio stepped on the accelerator from the start and led 49-24 early in the second quarter. The Lakers were on the floor for the third time in four days and had to do without Davis (hip), Russell (migraine) and Cam Reddish (knee). “Our team is not built to replace three starters,” said James: “But the Spurs played great and deserved respect. They threw the ball very well.”

Nevertheless, the Lakers, led by LeBron James (23 points, 7/17 FG, 14 assists), started a counteroffensive in the second period; after a 38:17 run, the guests were only -4 behind shortly before halftime. However, LA was never able to take the lead, and San Antonio was often ahead by double digits again after the break. This was also due to Spurs’ good three-point rate of 18/42 (42.9 percent). Vassell accounted for 5 of those goals on 10 attempts, while also shooting 12/19 from the field and committing just 1 turnover en route to 36 points.

Wembanyama (13) only sank 5/13 FG, but grabbed 15 rebounds and played 5 assists alongside 2 steals and 2 blocks. “It felt like a playoff game for me,” the top pick cheered: “I’m addicted to it, I love it.” All Spurs starters scored in double figures, with good support coming off the bench from Cedi Osman (15, 3/6 3P, 6 assists) and Zach Collins (16, 6 rebounds).

Despite the failures, the Lakers also still had two good reserves up their sleeves: Rui Hachimura (20, 4 assists) and Christian Wood (17, 2 blocks) were on the floor for over 30 minutes each. Austin Reaves was back in the starting lineup and contributed 22 points (4/10 3P) and 4 assists, Jaxson Hayes (8, 7 rebounds) and Max Christie (2, 1/6 FG) took less advantage of their chances.
