Sad consolation for Celta

A tie that doesn’t say much. A sad consolation judging by the situation with which the Vigo team arrived in Vallecas and by their behavior. Difficult to offer less. A vulgar, vulgar, incapable team of playing with a minimum of sense and of which the only thing that can be praised is the defensive involvement (Starfelt and Guaita stood out) to resist an opponent who is not much of a deal either and who is also going through a difficult moment in form. The draw does not solve Vigo’s problems, but at least it relieves them before Saturday’s final against Granada.

Celta played for few things to happen. He evaded any responsibility with the ball and hid in his field waiting for a robbery or an inaccuracy by Rayo Vallecano to allow him to run in the direction of the opposing goal. He already warns Benítez that he does not want street races or back-and-forth matches, that he likes another scenario. And with that idea he set up the Vallecas plan. Aspas stayed on the bench (perhaps the threat of a fifth yellow card leaving him without Saturday’s crucial match against Granada weighed on him) and Douvikas and Larsen They played as a couple at the top as happened during the visit to Las Palmas.

The rest was as expected, with the midfield made up of Tapia, Luca and Mingueza. A distant shot of Douvikas and a couple of crosses that went nowhere is all the Vigo team can place on their merit list during the first half. On the other hand, Rayo still found a couple of dangerous situations in which they forced Vicente Guaita to intervene with a firm hand, the best of a Celta as innocent as it was blurred.

The situation got worse in the second half.. And it was complicated. Celta completely disappeared from the scene and allowed themselves to be overwhelmed by Rayo Vallecano who did not have to do much to subdue the Vigo team, incapable of making two passes in a row, of getting a meaningful ball or getting close to the Madrid area. with the possibility of generating a minimum of concern. The chances came for Francisco’s team and Guaita had to appear on the scene to make a couple of worthwhile interventions.

Only time played in favor of the most fearful and mediocre version of Celta. Benítez moved the bench half an hour from the end to enter Cervi and Beltrán, purely cosmetic changes that in no way changed a Celta that at least resisted thanks to its goalkeeper and the good performance of Starfelt who got the team out of more than one problem.

With twenty minutes left Benítez brought on Iago Aspas and Celta at least found a reference, someone to whom they could give the ball and something useful could come of it. It didn’t help much either, but the game stopped being played in the Guaita area which was positive news the way things were going. A shot by Kevin that tangled with the Rayo goalkeeper was the only thing that came close to being “dangerous” that Celta generated in the entire second half.

But the fatigue of the people of Madrid and his better positioning at least allowed him to have a placid end to the match. The problem is that with Rayo somewhat resigned, he did not find the talent or the determination to look for something more than this tie that does not taste like much.
