Rules and Qualifying Conditions for Tennis at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games

The bells of 2024 will soon ring and who says 2024 says Paris Olympic Games. Each event has its qualifying conditions and tennis has very specific ones. The events will take place in the legendary Roland Garros venue on clay from July 26.

Olympic tennis games: the global rules

Each country can send 12 athletes, six men and six women to represent their nation. Of the six places, four players will be able to compete in singles, two in doubles and one mixed doubles. The top 56 in the world in the ATP and WTA rankings as of June 10, 2024 are automatically qualified with still the limit of four people per country. Each athlete must have played at least one Davis Cup/Billie Jean King match with a few exceptions (injuries for example).

Olympic tennis games: rules for singles tournaments

The singles draws will be made up of 64 players. The other eight places will be distributed by the ITF. ITF places are awarded to winners or finalists of continental competitions in America (women’s and men’s singles finalists at the 2023 Pan American Games), Asia (women’s and men’s singles winners at the 2022 Asian Games) and Africa ( winners in singles, women and men, of the 2023 African Games). Other places will be given to Olympic or Grand Slam singles champions who were unable to qualify by other means, on the sole conditions that they are not in the top 400 in singles and that their NOC does not exceed its maximum quota.

Olympic tennis games: rules for doubles tournaments

Each doubles tournament will have 32 teams, maximum two per country. The automatic qualifiers are the first 10 players in the ATP and WTA doubles rankings, provided that they have a partner from the same NOC among the first 300 of all these rankings, and that the nomination of the partner does not exceed to the NOC its maximum quota. Quotas will be distributed based on the combined ranking of the partners. Priority will be given to teams that already have players qualified for one of the singles events.

Olympic tennis games: rules for mixed doubles tournaments

Same rule as for the same-sex doubles tournament, only the table will be 16 teams instead of 32 and each nation can only field one team instead of two.
