The 39-year-old will join the Hornets after serving as an assistant coach with the Boston Celtics. Lee accompanied the Celtics throughout their playoff run before joining the Hornets full-time. He spent the last five seasons alongside Mike Budenholzer, before joining the Celtics last summer.

Lee will replace Steve Clifford, who announced before the end of the regular season that he would resign as head coach of the Hornets after two seasons, completing his second stint with the team. The Hornets finished the campaign with a 21-61 record, tied with the Portland Trail Blazers.

Lee will therefore inherit a club that has not participated in the NBA playoffs for the last eight seasons, the longest active drought in the league. Additionally, the Hornets haven’t won a playoff series in 22 years, a stretch during which the legendary Michael Jordan was their owner for more than a decade.

Jordan sold the Hornets to Rick Schnall and Gabe Plotkin last year.

Since that time, the co-owners have been busy, including replacing their general manager Mitch Kupchak –– who resigned – with Jeff Peterson.

Lee will work in partnership with Peterson to continue the club’s rebuild.
