Roberto Entrialgo, former manager and precursor of Sporting’s best era, dies at 84

Sporting says goodbye to one of the men who marked the best years in red and white history. Roberto Entrialgo Menéndez died this Monday, in Gijón, at the age of 84. Former manager and precursor of the best era of the Gijón club, he looked after the youth team both at the time when they played on the Los Fresno field, and later, in Mareo. He was one of Manuel Vega-Arango’s trusted men during the club’s golden era and a person close to those who built “a team that was a football-making machine.”

“You, Roberto, represent the Sporting family,” said Joaquín Alonso, president of the Sporting Veterans Association and now institutional relations of the club, when in 2013 this group paid tribute to Entrialgo during its annual gala. It was the applause for the one who took care of many of Joaquín’s generation, the best of the rojiblanco club, until they became internationals and figures of Spanish football. Witness of Sporting’s debut in European competition, the man from Gijón reviewed with LA NEW ESPAÑA how he lived those years in the Gijón team, during a report published in 2018 on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the debut in continental competition. “If El Molinón is full now, when playing against rivals like Extremadura, imagine what could happen if Torino came. That was a leading European power,” Entrialgo commented at the time.

Roberto Entrialgo had joined the board of directors in 1977 and after completing that term with Vega-Arango, he was part of the board of directors of Ramón Muñoz until 1989. The mostarles remains of Roberto Entrialgo rest in room 2 of the Caueñes funeral home. The funeral of the body present will be this Tuesday, at 1:00 p.m., in the parish church of San Juan XXIII, in Viesques. He leaves María de las Nieves Sánchez a widow, with whom he had five children: Pablo, Roberto, Álvaro, Andrés and María de las Nieves.
