RFEF and LaLiga Announce Public Release of Referee and VAR Conversations

12:00 PM

With a view to ending the refereeing controversies, the RFEF (Royal Spanish Football Federation) reached an agreement with LaLiga, in charge of managing the European country’s tournaments, to make public the conversations between the referee and the VAR (video Assistant Referee) , when they check the monitor in the middle of the game.

In the statement, the RFEF says that this decision is made “with the aim of providing refereeing in professional football and the competitions themselves with greater transparency.” The protocol dictates that the images and audios of the plays examined by the VAR will be broadcast each day at the end of the day.

The agreement will begin to be applied in the Spanish Super Cup, from the semifinals on January 10 and 11, and in the final that will be on January 14. In the league championship it will take place from the 20th, planned to take place between January 12 and 15, and in the second division from the 22nd.

The Federation plans that “the fans’ experience will be improved and a greater understanding of refereeing decisions by viewers will be encouraged, thus optimizing the competitions as a whole.”

The president of the Technical Committee of Referees of Spain, Luis Medina Cantalejo, in a video published on the ‘X’ account of the RFEF, defines the adoption of the new rule as a historic moment.

After the meeting held on December 19, only the publication of the conversations was confirmed, as do Ligue 1 or the Premier League. It is expected that in the coming days both the RFEF and LaLiga will provide more information to understand how the new protocol will work.
