Mayor Christoph Fleischhauer got to know a special sports team in mid-December: the Refugee Judo Team. The mixed-gender team will compete at the Olympic Games in Paris in the summer of 2024. What is also special is that the team consists exclusively of refugees. They originally come from Afghanistan, Syria or Iran. The young women and men now live in Moers and the surrounding area as well as in Scotland, the Netherlands and Canada. “They are more than athletes, they are ambassadors,” said Fleischhauer, who praised the young people’s commitment. He wished them that their sporting and private wishes would come true in their new home.
