#10: Jo-Wilfried Tsonga

Tsonga, formerly world No. 5, called time on his career in 2022 – after starting a family and his priorities shifting – and also because of ongoing injury problems.

#9: Richard Gasquet

“Richie”, now 37 years old, is still active and, after many injury problems, has played his way back into the top world class. Current rank: 76.

#8: Stan Wawrinka

“Stan the Man”, 38, also had many physical problems, especially his knee that kept him out of action for a long time. Wawrinka is currently ranked 49th, and even though it wasn’t enough for the big successes recently, he remains a surprise candidate for really big matches!

#7: Tomas Berdych

The “Birdman” (loosely based on Brad Gilbert) ended his career in 2019. Berdych was ranked in the top ten for years and was in the Wimbledon final in 2010 – his nerves often got in the way of his great success.

#6: Roger Federer

The Swiss maestro played one of his worst seasons in 2013, plagued by back problems. After another high in 2017, 2018 and 2019, when Federer became number 1 again, the knee went on strike. Federer ended his career in 2022 and might otherwise play until he was 100, as former coach Ivan Ljubicic once joked.

#5: Juan Martin del Porto

The “Tower of Tandil” continued to struggle with injury problems after 2013. After the wrist stopped (and Delpo reached the US Open final again in 2018), he injured his knee. And never recovered from it.

#4: Andy Murray

The indestructible one! Murray, number 1 in 2016, had already planned to retire in 2019 due to his hip injury, but then came back with an artificial replacement. However, it’s no longer at the top – the “Sir” is currently in 42nd place.

#3: David Ferrer

The all-time top ten man and French Open finalist has been in deserved retirement since 2019. He was also briefly active as Alexander Zverev’s coach, but stopped this activity due to travel obligations.

#2: Novak Djokovic

The only one who is currently at the top. And how! Djokovic is once again number 1 at the end of the year in 2023, after three Grand Slam titles this year. An end? Is not in sight for the record man in tennis.

#1: Rafael Nadal

“Rafa” will be out of the top 10 in 2023 for the first time since 2005 and was ruled out for the rest of the season after suffering a hip injury in January. He wants to attack again in 2024 – it’s quite possible that we’ll find him among the ten best players again at the end of the year!
