Borussia Dortmund moves into the final of the Champions League with two wins over Paris Saint-Germain. This brings great joy, but also satisfaction. Just like captain Emre Can, who is clear in his choice of words.

Borussia Dortmund captain Emre Can hit out at his critics after BVB reached the final in the Champions League. The professional footballer admitted after the 1-0 win in the second leg of the semi-final on Tuesday at Paris St. Germain that Dortmund was represented in a final of the European premier class for the first time since 2013. It was a personal satisfaction for him.

“I can also say this openly: They can shut up now,” said Can when asked specifically about his critics after the game. Given the weak Bundesliga season, Can in particular was repeatedly the focus of criticism.

Sky expert Dietmar Hamann accused him of a lack of discipline and a lack of game intelligence. After the Dortmund game in Bremen (2-1), the former national player said: “In Emre Can, you have a captain who ran a counterattack yesterday in the 90th minute, then shot eight meters over the goal from a tight angle and went down with a cramp. Bremen were so gracious and kicked the ball out, but then it took three minutes until it came back in.”

“Nobody believed in us anymore,” says Can

Can was recently no longer called up to the national team by national coach Julian Nagelsmann. This was also the case for other Dortmund national players such as Niklas Süle, Julian Brandt, Nico Schlotterbeck and the match winner from Paris, Mats Hummels.

“We are now in the final and that is definitely good,” Can continued: “We brought incredible energy to the pitch. I am extremely proud of the team. After the second matchday we had a point and nobody believed in us anymore. But we believed in ourselves.”

Then Can took a stand for the much-criticized defense, which had already allowed 40 goals in 32 games in the Bundesliga. Remaining twice without conceding a goal against Paris was “a great quality,” emphasized the 30-year-old and looked ahead to the final on June 1st at Wembley Stadium in London: “Now we want to take one more step. We are ready.”
