Referee Deniz Aytekin Suggests Explaining Decisions to Fans, Testing VAR Images on Stadium Screens

Hardly a match day goes by without debates about referee decisions. Now there is a suggestion for improvement from a referee heavyweight (225 Bundesliga appearances)!

Deniz Aytekin (45) said in the “Copa TS” podcast by ZDF man Tommi Schmitt: “What I think would be cool and what I have no problem with is explaining the decisions to the fans in the stadium. I would support anything that helps increase acceptance of the decision.”

A model for the Bundesliga? In fact, the suggestion of the two-time referee of the year (2019, 2022) is not new. At the Club World Cup in February, referees had already explained their decisions to fans in the stadium and TV viewers based on video evidence.

To do this, they used the headsets that they also use to communicate with their colleagues.

It was the start of a one-year test phase by the International Football Association Board (IFAB), which is, however, limited to international competitions. The model was used, among other things, at the Women’s World Cup and most recently at the U17 World Cup in Indonesia.

In the Bundesliga, the microphone declarations could not come until 2024 at the earliest.

DFB referee boss Lutz-Michael Fröhlich told BILD: “We will talk to our referees about it at the winter training camp in Portugal and are preparing for it. There are several models. However, FIFA must first give approval. And Uefa will decide whether this will be introduced at Euro 2024.”

But one thing is also clear: the conversations between the referee and the video assistant would remain secret; only the result of the consultation would be announced. Things are similar in other sports such as ice hockey or football.

Will there be VAR images on the stadium screens soon?

So far, football fans in the stadium have only been informed about what was checked and what the result is through information on the video walls.

Currently only TV viewers can enjoy the VAR images. That could change soon too! Video referee boss Jochen Drees (43) is open to technical possibilities. Even before the start of the season, he demanded that “stadium visitors and television viewers see the same images in VAR situations. The fan in the stands should be on the same level as the television viewer.”
