The staden time was meant differently: Ratiopharm Ulm will play in the Basketball Bundesliga against Heidelberg on Friday (6.30 p.m.), on Boxing Day (7.30 p.m.) in the Eurocup against Ankara and on the following Friday (8 p.m.) in the Bundesliga at MBC. Coach Anton Gavel says: “For us it’s also about finding energy. We haven’t had a day to waste for months.” He scheduled one practice session for Christmas Eve and one for the first holiday – because there’s no other way. Gavel hopes to be able to spend a little time with his wife and four children at Christmas, especially since the stress after the holiday continues almost unabated and the burden on the people of Ulm is even greater than last season. They had an early exit from the cup and are still involved in all three competitions this season.

Under these circumstances, the home game against second-to-last Heidelberg needs to be tackled with full concentration. Otherwise, something like this can go terribly wrong, as the German champions’ players found out in their home defeat against Rostock. Philipp Herkenhoff knows roughly what makes his opponent Heidelberg tick. “I’ve played for teams like that myself,” says the 2.09-meter man from Ulm: “You only have one game a week, you’re fighting against relegation and you see every game as an opportunity.”
