Premier League: Player collapses, game abandoned

Luton Town’s game at AFC Bournemouth had to be abandoned in the English Premier League on Saturday after Luton captain Tom Lockyer collapsed on the pitch in the second half. The player received treatment on the pitch midway through the second half.

Luton said in a statement that Lockyer had been “responsive”. However, it is still unclear what exactly happened. Referee Simon Hooper finally called off Saturday’s match half an hour after the events on the pitch. “We are all hoping and praying for our captain Tom Lockyer, who is thankfully responsive and has been taken to hospital,” Luton’s statement said.

After a few minutes he was taken off the pitch on a stretcher to the applause of the fans. The 29-year-old Lockyer collapsed in the play-off final against Coventry City in May and was taken to hospital at the time. He underwent heart surgery and was then given the green light to continue his career.

Triple winner Manchester City missed the jump to second place on matchday 17. Team manager Pep Guardiola’s team couldn’t get past a 2-2 (1-0) draw against Crystal Palace without the injured goal guarantor Erling Haaland.

Jack Grealish (24th) and Wilson Lewis (54th) scored the goals for the Citizens. Former Mainz player Jean-Philippe Mateta (76th) scored the goal for the guests, while Michael Olise (90th + 5) managed to equalize. ManCity is three points behind league leaders FC Liverpool (37 points) with coach Jürgen Klopp in fourth place.

The Reds have to play against record champions Manchester United on Sunday. Arsenal FC (36), who are playing against Brighton & Hove Albion at home, want to stick with Liverpool.
